The Law of Belief

Many years ago I learned about the Law of Belief from one of my early mentors —  Brian Tracy

The Law of Belief states that, “Whatever you believe, with emotion, becomes your reality.”

BeliefThe Law of Belief says that you do not necessarily believe what you see, but you see what you have already decided to believe.

In other words, your beliefs control your reality.

You always act in a manner consistent with your inner most beliefs and convictions.

In fact, it’s not too hard to tell what you, or anyone else believes by simply looking at what you do.

It is not what a person says, or hopes, or writes, or wishes, or intends that is a clear indication of their beliefs.

It is only their actions.

It is only what a person actually does that tells you what they truly believe.

Now to be honest, I didn’t fully understand or accept this important principle when I first heard this – I thought it was all a bit of metaphysical hoo-hah!

But let’s look at this another way…

How do world record holders in athletics, swimming or any sport reach the pinnacle of glory?

A large part of it is by believing in themselves.

The law of Belief says, “What I think, I become.”

In other words, you will manifest what you believe.

Now you’ve heard me say it before…over 90% of our behaviours are operated by our subconscious mind.

And if they are subconscious then we don’t know about them, right?

We all have empowering beliefs and disempowering beliefs lurking in our minds

So what negative beliefs are lurking in your subconscious mind, making your life more miserable than it should be or not as great as you deserve?

Key BeliefAnd what positive beliefs are buried there that you are not maximising?

As I said, the Law of Belief states that we do not believe what we see, we rather see what we have already decided to believe.

Brian Tracy taught me that this universal law is a foundational law of life to the extent that without wholeheartedly believing that something can become a part of your reality, then consequently it will always remain out of your reach — no matter how desperately you may want it.

You see…

Unfortunately, life doesn’t give us what we want…

But rather we get what we intend with feeling — whether that intention lies at a conscious or unconscious level of awareness.

Our thoughts and beliefs lead to our feelings.

Our feelings lead to our actions and our actions lead to our results.

The great thing is that the Law of Belief is reversible as well

Success MindYou see… beliefs are built upon a mix of fact and fictitious perspectives we have about life, ourselves and others.

They were formed as a child based on things we heard, things we saw and thing we experienced in the first decade of our lives.

Particularly if these beliefs are about money and wealth and success.

Of course we learned these ways of thinking from our mentors at the time – our parents who were well meaning, but probably weren’t wealthy themselves.

Beliefs are built upon prejudice

When we prejudge something, we are ineffectively reaching premature conclusions about the events and circumstances that are directing our attention.

In many instances, we reach conclusions despite evidence to the contrary, or despite our best efforts to make logical sense of the situation at hand.

Thoughts like rich people are greedy or you can’t be rich and happy.

Negative PositiveBeliefs are based on incomplete and biased sensory perspectives that have been conditioned and programmed over time through our memories of past events, circumstances, and experience.

For example if your parents fought about money when you were young, it’s likely you will relate money to pain, stress and anger rather than to positive emotions such as pleasure and choices.

These memories that we believe are real, are in fact only interpretations we made about reality at the time.

And, as I explained, often this was when we were children and didn’t have the perspective to really understand what was going on.

Then over time these interpretations of reality have been filtered over-and-over again through our belief systems and have taken on a life of their own — reinterpreting our life experiences in a multitude of unique and creative ways that have nothing to do with the reality of those events.

Beliefs determine how we behave on a daily basis

The problem is, we consistently act in accordance with the beliefs we have about the world, ourselves, others, events, and circumstances.

Bad HabitsThese are pre-programmed responses and reactions that we have conditioned ourselves to accept without question.

And the longer we allow these conditioned responses to perpetuate within our psyche, then the greater difficulty we will have in transforming these patterns for the better.

Putting in bluntly… beliefs are nothing more than just illusions of reality.

We’re all walking around with tinted glasses on, and each of us have different tints for different situations.

The problem is we don’t know we’re wearing tinted glasses.

Many of us have…. Self-Limiting beliefs

These are beliefs that you have about yourself, about others, about circumstances and the world around you that limit your life in some way.

However, in most cases, these beliefs are just your interpretations that you made about reality and they work against the goals and objectives you desire to achieve.

I Can DoOur self-limiting beliefs make up the fundamental flaws of our psychology.

They limit our opportunities, behaviours, and actions in so many ways at an unconscious level of awareness, that it is frightening to think about the possible long-term impact they are having upon our lives.

Your self-limiting beliefs undermine your ability to grow.

They essentially paralyse your ability to think effectively, to make sensible decisions and to take proactive actions.

If you are finding yourself fighting through procrastination, stress, worry, anxiety or fear, then these are sure signs that your self-limiting beliefs are controlling your life’s reality and ultimate destiny.

Your self-limiting beliefs will hold you back from living the life you desire to experience, and will dramatically limit your potential in so many ways that it is very difficult to fathom the true extent of their impact on your life.

Your self-limiting beliefs consistently encourage the development fear, self-doubt and lead to patterns of emotional self-sabotage.

As I said, the great thing is that the Law of Belief is reversible as well.

Self DevelopmentSince you act in a manner consistent with your beliefs, and you can control your actions, if you engage in the actions consistent with the beliefs that you want to have about yourself and your life, you eventually develop those beliefs, just as you develop muscles by lifting weights.

For example, if you absolutely believe that you are destined to be a great success in your chosen field, and you walk, talk, act and behave every single day exactly the way a great success would act, you will eventually develop the mindset of a high performer in that field.

But it’s more than just that…

  1. Become aware of your self-limiting beliefs and your self talk – because up till now it’s been happening in the background, subconsciously.
  2. Reject your limiting beliefs by no longer accepting the control that they have over your life.
  1. Cultivate empowering beliefs.

Your feelings and emotions will give life to your beliefs.

Therefore, by sprinkling them with intense feeling and you will progressively transform these beliefs into unshakable convictions that will move you towards the attainment of your goals and objectives.

  1. Model the beliefs of successful people.

Find role models that have already achieved what you want to achieve.

Business MentorThen find out what drives these people, what beliefs and convictions they cultivate within their psyche, and model these patterns within your own mind.

They have attained their current level of success because of the beliefs that are driving and dictating their patterns of behaviour.

How do you find out what going on in their minds? It’s so much easier to get into the minds of successful people today– read their books – devour their blogs listen to their podcasts and watch their videos.

  1. Challenge the self-limiting beliefs that are currently holding you back from the life you want to experience. Simply begin by questioning their validity and existence, and make a resolution that you will no longer accept them in your life.
  2. Work on developing your natural talents and abilities by involving yourself in activities that will help instil new empowering belief patterns within your psyche. These new belief patterns will spread like wildfire and affect all other aspects of your life.
  1. Don’t accept the self-limiting beliefs that are currently dictating your life’s decisions and actions.
  1. Don’t settle for less than your best. If you are taking shortcuts or not giving your best at any moment in time, then this is a sure sign that you have a set of limiting beliefs that are currently shaping your life’s decisions and actions.
  2. Don’t prejudge possible problems. Consider the possibility that problems can at times be opportunities in disguise. However, they will always be problemsif you see them in the light of your own limiting patterns of believing.

The bottom line…

The Law of belief can work in your favour or against you.

If like many people you allow your childhood conditioning and the self-limiting beliefs you learned run your life they will hold you back from the attaining the success you deserve.

On the other hand, if used correctly, the Law of Belief  will allow you to attract what you want most into your life.

Remember…your thoughts lead to your feelings, your feelings lead to your actions and your actions lead to your results.
